Tsumugi is the only silk weave registered as a UNESCO cultural heritage. Tsumugi dyed using methods from Japan’s Amami Oshima islands are the most highly prized. The 30-process mud-and-indigo dyeing technique can take a year to complete, with a minimum of 6 months. When new, like this handsome haori, it looks jet black with flashes of brown and indigo. As the fabric ages the brown and black become more muted, allowing the indigo to come to the fore. Immaculate, original basting stitches still in place
