An exceptional example of kasuri hand-weaving, rewarding closer inspection. the warp and weft yarns are dyed at intervals, such that they form a picture once woven. This method was first devised in Hirokawa, near Tokyo, in the 1700s. It was a revolutionary new use of the heddle loom which was unchanged for at least 500 years. This Kurume Kasuri method reinvigorated both the indigo and tsumugi (silk noil) markets.
