Hemp went out of fashion in the Meiji period (1860-1912), when indigo cotton exploded on the scene. Increasingly efficient cotton crops and a revolution in the process of indigo dyeing rendered the production of hemp comparitively clumsy.
The rural area of Japan , being less swayed by fashion and industrialisation, held on to their classic methods of fixing indigo and hemp farming. This chambray is composed of a bleached warp and richly-dyed indigo weft. The width of the loom suggests that this was grown and perhaps dyed Toshigi prefecture from a non-narcotic hemp variant Cannabis Sativa Tochigishiro, a cultivar developed for the Japanese climate.
