Pure silk obi like this are becoming increasingly scarce. The fine craftsmanship endures, but the materials used today are mostly synthetic. Where once threads of silver, gold, and even platinum were employed, lurex now dominates most production.
This particular example, however, is a rare exception. The silk-and-metal weave has undergone a process called "sunago," where a light dusting of pure gold sand is embedded into the finished fabric, creating a radiant sheen that will never tarnish.
